Women's Professional Tennis Returns to La Costa Resort and Spa in 2010
Return of Sony Ericsson WTA Event to Boost Local Community
Carlsbad, CA (September 2009) - The recent announcement that the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour will return to San Diego with a tournament event at La Costa Resort and Spa in 2010 has the legendary Carlsbad resort providing its own "stimulus package" both for the resort and the community.
"In the two years since the Acura Women's Tennis Classic was held at La Costa, the community as a whole, as well as surrounding businesses have felt the impact of not having a tennis event of this caliber at La Costa," said April Shute, Vice President and General Manager. "We've been working since that time to secure another tennis event, so we are thrilled to host this tournament. We are proud to play a role in helping to reenergize our community and local businesses as we all continue to deal with this difficult economic climate."
The event will be one of the ten tournaments (five WTA and five ATP) comprising the Olympus US Open Series. The return of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour to San Diego is expected to be well received among the players as the event has traditionally been among the most desirable Tour stops. The event will replace the LA Women's Tennis Championship in the beginning of August on the Tour calendar. Longtime Acura Classic Tournament Director Raquel Giscafre will return to run the event.
"We are pleased to support the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and the US Open Series by reintroducing a high level women's tennis event to Southern California," said Micky Lawler, Octagon's Managing Director of Tennis. "This tournament will build upon the long tradition of professional tennis at La Costa and will provide the world's best players with an ideal competitive environment on the road to the US Open."
The addition of the San Diego event bolsters Octagon's leading global role in the ownership and management of WTA and ATP Tour events. Octagon owns and/or manages 15 WTA and ATP Tour events and has been widely credited for globalizing both tours. In the United States, Octagon's ownership interests include The MPS Group Championships in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and the Western & Southern Financial Group Championships, which is also part of the US Open Series, in Cincinnati, OH.
"We are excited to see the return of women's professional tennis to San Diego at the La Costa Resort," said Stacey Allaster, Chairman & CEO of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. "Ensuring that the US market continued to have a series of Premier level events during the summer was a strategic priority for the Tour, and I am confident that the San Diego event will be a favorite of fans and players alike."
Octagon has a rich and proud history in the sport of tennis, having managed the careers of 63 Grand Slam Champions and 11 Olympic gold medalists over three decades. For more info on Octagon's tennis division, please visit www.octagontennis.com.

LEGOLAND® Immortalizes Little League Champions
Press Release 09/18/2009 - "LEGOLAND California is designed to inspire children to be heroes and that is exactly what the Park View team has done. They have inspired the hero in us all," said General Manager of LEGOLAND California Resort Peter Ronchetti.
Ronchetti announced the Miniland scene and presented the team with a 5-foot-long World Series banner made of more than 8,000 LEGO® bricks at the Chula Vista City Council Meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 15. At that time, each member of the team, plus Coach Ric Ramirez and Manager Oscar Castro, were given LEGO baseballs made exclusively for them as well as a LEGO baseball cap to sign and present to President Barack Obama during their upcoming visit to the White House.
To construct the Miniland scene, each player as well as Coach Ramirez and Manager Castro have been rendered as "Minilanders." Minilanders are generally four-inches-high and inhabit Miniland U.S.A., the heart of LEGOLAND California where more than 22 million LEGO bricks are used to recreate famous cities including Washington, D.C., New York, Las Vegas, New Orleans, San Francisco, Daytona, New England and the Southern California coastline. The scene took about two weeks to complete and includes the baseball diamond, umpires, stands with fans and, of course, both teams who played in the final game of the Little League World Series.
"One of the challenges in building this scene is that the team uniforms require special colors such as light blue and teal which are not commonly used and don't come in a huge selection of pieces," said Master Model Designer Gary McIntire." Another challenge was recreating the emotions felt on the field. It's difficult to create an expression on a blank face so it's all about body language."
The scene depicts an excited Park View team dressed in light blue uniforms jumping up and giving high-fives and dog-piling each other to express their happiness while the Taiwan team is displayed in a disappointed nature - heads in their hands, arms-crossed and defeated. "It was actually quite depressing creating the team from Taiwan because their expressions had to be so sad," McIntire continued.
"While many popular icons and celebrities can be spotted throughout LEGOLAND California, this is the first time we've ever immortalized local heroes," said LEGOLAND Spokesperson Julie Estrada.

Carlsbad History
In 1883, the railroad arrived in Southern California in earnest and the land between the growing metropolises of Los Angeles and San Diego suddenly became accessible and practical for homesteaders. Interest in Carlsbad began at that time and has grown steadily since.
The Arizona Eastern Railway built the Carlsbad depot in 1887. The depot also served as a telegraph office, post office, Wells Fargo Express Office and general store. Purchased by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in 1905, the depot also became a shipping point for locally grown fruit, vegetables and flowers. The beautiful, historic structure is now playing its third role. After being closed in 1960, it was deeded to the city and now serves as the Visitor Information Center, providing information and assistance to Carlsbad's visitors.
What's in a name?
Shortly after settlers began moving into the area, retired sea captain John Frazier set about drilling a well on his homestead. He struck not drinking water and not oil but mineral water. Laboratory tests revealed the water to have the same mineral properties as the famously therapeutic baths in Karlsbad, Bohemia (now a part of the Czech Republic). So Frazier borrowed the name - with a slightly Americanized spelling change.
Frazier began graciously offering cool sips to thirsty travelers passing through on the train and these waters also became famous for their apparent healing powers.
After three years, Frazier sold his well to German immigrant Gerhard Schutte. Showing a more aggressive business sense, Schutte promptly established the California Land and Mineral Water Company, built a new 100-room hotel and began touting the fledgling town as "the greatest seaside sanatorium on the Pacific coast - blessed with mineral wells which affect astonishing cures in remarkably brief periods."
In 1887 Schutte also built himself a spacious mansion. After Schutte's time, this became known as one of Carlsbad's Twin Inns. Today it houses Ocean House Restaurant.
The Great Depression of the 1930s saw a distinct downturn in business. The Carlsbad Mineral Springs Hotel went bankrupt and the famous mineral well was capped. It remained inoperative for some 60 years, until, in 1994, a new well was drilled, and the elegant Alt Karlsbad Mineral Water Day Spa opened in the beautiful European-style Karlsbad Hanse House on the site of the original well.
Carlsbad was a city of 300 at the start of the 20th century. Today, the population is more than 90,000. Even with this growth, many of the valleys and hillsides remain undeveloped and delightfully wild. The friendly small-town atmosphere prized and marketed by Schutte remains a feature of Carlsbad's historic downtown. These unique features, combined with the welcoming friendliness of Carlsbad's residents, makes this city what it has been for more than a century – a visitor's paradise.

The Magee House Rose Garden
Surrounding the 1887 Historic Magee house is a qualitative garden of about 225 rose bushes representing 15 families of the rose. One garden is modern roses and the other garden contains Old Garden roses and shrubs. A new miniature rose garden was planted in 2003. This magical garden is maintained by the members of the California Coastal Rose Society and established by Ivy Bodin of Vista with love and care for many years.
In the Fall-Winter of 1996/97 the California Coastal Rose Society undertook with the City of Carlsbad a renovation of the old rose garden at the Magee House. The flowerbeds and rose gardens had been designed and put in place by the city in the mid 1970s. The society had been meeting monthly in Heritage Hall in Magee Park for a number of years and proposed free ongoing rental use of the facility in exchange for the society renovating, planting and maintaining the old rose garden in future years. Roses were solicited and received from a California grower. About 2 to 3 dozen new roses were added to a few older remnant bushes in the garden.
As the bushes were leafing out in the spring of 1997 Ivy Bodin joined the CCRS and asked to be allowed to supervise the maintenance of the garden. He led the CCRS volunteers through 5 years of garden maintenance adding a significant number of roses to the two-part garden. With a special interest in heritage roses he added many of these varieties and created a separate garden of heritage and shrub roses to represent many varieties of rose classes. He also enhanced the separate modern rose garden, adding classic varieties of Hybrid Teas and Floribundas as well as minis and polyanthus to the collection. He, other CCRS members and the general public made rose bush contributions to the collection over those years.
In conjunction with the Carlsbad Arboretum Foundation, which gardened in the front of Magee House, CCRS worked with the other group to reclaim the abandoned flowerbeds surrounding the old historical house. Roses and other plants were added and as well roses were added to the old Red Barn behind the house in the park.
In 2001 the collection came to represent about 121 varieties of rose bushes in the Modern and Old rose/Shrub rose gardens up from an original 40 or so. Fifteen rose families are represented with 26 Hybrid Teas, 4 Grandifloras, 24 Floribundas, 10 Miniatures, 7 Polyanthus, 13 Shrubs (including David Austin English garden roses), 8 Chinas, 6 Teas, 4 Species, 4 Rugosas, 4 Hybrid Musks, 4 Noisettes and 1 Moss, 1 Bourbon, 1 Portland, 1 Damask and 1 Alba.
At the end of 2002 Ivy retired as garden director at Magee and Brenda Pollock Landers assumed directorship, assisted greatly by Joe Smith an original member of the garden. She implemented a significant addition of a mini rose collection to the garden in an ideal location near the old house.
The Craftsman cottage was built from pre-cut lumber, ordered from a mid-Western catalog of pre-designed homes. It is still standing today . When its owner, Florence Shipley Magee died, she left the house and land (about 5 acres) in 1974 to the City of Carlsbad to be used as a park and historical museum. The Carlsbad Historical Society now uses the house.
The Magee House has been recently repainted and repaired and glows with all the newly maintained color of plants at its sides. This is a worthwhile stop on Historical Highway 101 for anyone interested in history and plants, to experience one of Carlsbad's oldest structures located one block from the Pacific Ocean in a beautiful park setting.

A thundering Roman waterfall shower, a dip in an 85-degree heated pool, indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis, steam rooms and saunas, all in preparation for the exotic body therapies that follow. The Indochine Indulgence includes products from the sea and a ritual bath.
The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Aviara has water design elements that mimic the Pacific Ocean and nearby Batiquitos Lagoon. A flowing wall of water and a cascading fountain convey a soothing sense of nature. One of the most popular water treatments here is a "water shiatsu" with guest and therapist in a private, 98-degree heated pool.
After a series of stretches and dance-like movements a sense of euphoria, is achieved. The Spa at Four Seasons offers a variety of scrumptious bath rituals. The rejuvenating rose, relaxing lavender and invigorating sports baths each provide a unique sensory experience. Ocean Pearl Spa is a Southern California coastal oasis with magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean located on the grounds of the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa. Decorated in a soothing ivory and gray-toned marine-based theme, the overall experience is calming, inviting and gender-neutral to appeal to both men and women of all ages.
Offering innovative, organic marine-based beauty treatments, indulgent products and pampering amenities at competitive prices, Ocean Pearl Spa offers specialty packages that appeal to a wide variety of spa-goers including brides, girlfriends, golfers, executives, groups, and couples.
