The Mercury Insurance Open presented by Tri-City Medical Center, a WTA Premier event that is part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series, will be held July 14-22, 2012 at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California. The event features some of the best women's tennis players in the world in a 28-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw competing for $740,000 in prize money. La Costa’s tennis center has enjoyed a long history of hosting some of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world. In the 1970s, the resort hosted the Grand Prix, which attracted such household tennis names as Jimmy Connors, Ilie Nastase and Bjorn Borg, and two Davis Cup competitions. Beginning in the 90’s, the resort hosted the nationally televised Women’s Professional Tennis Tour’s Acura Classic for 16 years and drew some of the most revered names in women’s tennis, among them Venus and Serena Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Maria Sharapova.
