Carlsbad Food Tours: A Tasty Walkabout

Carlsbad Food Tours’s small group outings average four to eight people (though they accommodate groups of all sizes), and include less than a mile of walking from start to finish on mostly flat surfaces. Private tours at alternative times can also be arranged.

Gemological Institute of America Museum: Beauty Under Pressure
Did you know Carlsbad is home to the organization that, in 1940, set the standard for evaluating the quality of diamonds? The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is a research and educational organization known for its expertise in gemstones, diamonds and pearls. It also houses a museum of permanent and rotating exhibits where guests can gawk at an array of polished and shimmering gems and minerals.
Exhibits include tourmaline carvings, quartz crystal sculptures, to ornamental minerals and jewelry spanning 200 years of jewelry design. Guided tours are complementary to the public Monday to Friday, and must be booked ahead.
The Flower Fields: Hop Aboard a Leisurely Tractor Wagon Ride
Come spring time, take a leisurely, family-friendly Tractor Wagon Ride through Carlsbad’s world-famous Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch, where tours roll through its 55 acres of blooming ranunculus, part of the buttercup family. Tickets for the open-air wagon ride tours may be purchased upon arrival, and children under the age of three ride free! Flowers are in bloom from late March to early May, including its 300-by-170-foot hillside of red, white and blue petunias strategically planted in the image of the American flag and five acres of bright yellow sunflowers.
Throughout the viewing season, The Flower Fields hosts immersive activities among its floral rainbow, such as morning and sunset yoga classes, live musical performances and wine tasting experiences. Year-round, families can also look forward to its fragrant Sweet Pea Maze, a butterfly encounter and more.

Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum
The Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum (MECM) is a place where skill, persistence and passion converge to showcase tiny (and oftentimes fully functioning) engines, autos, ships and more. They’re all displayed in the MECM’s 13,000-square-foot museum and working machine shop where visitors can browse its incredibly detailed exhibits Thursday to Saturday.
One of its most impressive models on display is a 1932 Duesenberg automobile that took craftsman Louis Chenot 20,000 hours to complete. That’s the equivalent of 10 years, or about eight hours a day, seven days a week for a decade! The model is ⅙ the size of the full-scale version, and all of its parts work, including its V8 engine.
Additionally, MEMC showcases precision metalwork, woodwork and more in models of hand-cranked toys, dollhouses and dioramas. Admission is free or donation-based, and group tours can be arranged with advance notice.

Museum of Making Music: Interact With Instruments, Test Sound Equipment and More
Celebrate and learn about the expansive world of music making at The Museum of Making Music (MOMM). Dig into the history of music making and explore hands-on interaction with traditional musical instruments like the guitar and piano, to electronic guitars, DJ consoles and sound mixers. MOMM is equally a place to experiment with today’s musical instruments and equipment and get a peek at innovations from major music brands like Yamaha, Positive Grid amps, software, and apps and strandberg* electric guitars and basses.
The museum is open to visitors Tuesday to Sunday, and suitable for guests of all ages. General admission is $15, with reduced rates for seniors, students and other groups. Admission is free for MOMM and National Association of Music Merchants members.

Self-Guided Art Tour Through Carlsbad Village: Creativity in Plein Air
Carlsbad Village is a colorful, open-air gallery for large painted murals by local and regional artists. And since these murals adorn the exterior walls of Carlsbad’s restaurants, surf and skate shops and specialty boutiques, they’re free to peruse at your leisure!
Local artist Bryan Snyder has created a map for a self-guided tour through the Village’s creative corners and artistic alleys. There are nearly 30 murals on view, and highlights include the Carlsbad Art Wall located on the east facing wall of Señor Grubby’s restaurant featuring rotating murals every few months. The similar-sounding Carlsbad Alley Art Wall located at 550 Grand Avenue invites aspiring muralists to explore their own creativity with a dedicated space among its permanent mural.

Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park: Stroll Through the Past
Take a self-guided stroll through a former working ranch and the vacation home of actor and preservationist Leo Carrillo. The Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park walking tour ambles through 27 acres of its various preserved and restored buildings. Some of them include its hacienda with central courtyard and secluded side garden, plus a reflecting pool, carriage house and cantina. Guided, 90-minute walking tours are available on weekends. A 13-minute video offers an overview of the park’s history.
From food tours to one-of-a-kind museums and outdoor adventures, it’s easy to play your way on your next visit to Carlsbad.
