Without spoiling too much, here’s a bit of information on our first two episodes of the series:
Episode One: An Incredible Agricultural History Fuels Agritourism in Carlsbad
The first episode of our series highlights the unique agricultural history of Carlsbad, focusing on The Carlsbad Flower Fields and Carlsbad Strawberry Company.
The Flower Fields have been a must-see in Carlsbad since 1993 and the magnificent ranunculus blooms attract visitors from all over. The colorful flowers that bloom in the spring have transformed the Carlsbad landscape, and the rainbow-colored fields are hard to miss. Visitors will agree how truly magical it is to stand among the flowers and be surrounded by their vibrant colors.
More than just a spectacle, The Flower Fields has years of family legacy behind it. The Flower Fields are a living tribute to the Ecke Family, who still steward the fields with the Mallano & Company. Originally grown as a crop for their bulbs, the ranunculus flowers have been hybridized over time to create the perfect blooms that make this seasonal attraction so popular today.
The Carlsbad Strawberry Company also has a strong family history. Starting as a small family farm, the Ukegawa family began growing strawberries that continue to be enjoyed by visitors today. In the competitive farming space, The Carlsbad Strawberry Company leaned into the agritourism aspect and began to offer a myriad of experiences that have helped the farm flourish. From U-Pick Strawberries, flower mazes and the very popular Halloween attractions like their giant pumpkin patch and haunted corn maze, the farm is a great place to spend time with your friends and family. This multigenerational farm is a gem of Carlsbad and a must-visit destination.

Episode Two: The Legendary Hill That Changed Skateboarding Forever
Episode two focuses on the incredible skate history of Carlsbad and how the legacy of the greats still lives on today through current skating champions.
Carlsbad has been a cornerstone of skateboarding culture since the 1970s and continues to be a popular destination for skaters. One of the most iconic spots was the infamous Black Hill in La Costa, which became the ideal place for skaters to test their skills. Black Hill was a mecca for skateboarding. With its smooth blacktop road and little traffic, it was ideal for downhill skating for legends like Denis Shufeldt, Gary Cogaro and Robin Logan. The difficulty of the road led to skaters experimenting with different wheel sizes and materials as well as board types, so that they could make it down the hill in one piece and with significant speed.
Did you know the Carlsbad is home to the world’s first ever skatepark? Although John O’Malley’s Carlsbad Skatepark is no longer standing, it has forever left its mark on skateboarding culture.
To this day, the pioneering energy of skateboarding lives on in Carlsbad, with many top athletes in the sport, including members of Team USA, training on the streets and skateparks in the area.
Be sure to tune in for this episode to hear the inspiring stories of Carlsbad’s skateboarding icons and competitive athletes and learn more about the history of what makes Carlsbad so special.
