From sunset strolls to riding the waves, Carlsbad’s coastline stretches across seven miles of picturesque beaches just waiting to be explored.

Each beach offers its own unique vibe, whether you’re chasing the perfect wave, seeking calm water to swim or hoping to uncover hidden tidepools. When visiting Carlsbad, set your sights on discovering all the beaches that make up this iconic stretch of shoreline. Pack a swimsuit and some sunscreen and get ready to soak in the laid-back beach lifestyle Carlsbad is famous for. Let’s dive into the best places to spend a beach day!

Tamarack State Beach
Surf’s up at Tamarack State Beach! This beach, also known as Carlsbad State Beach, is known for its stretch of gorgeous sandy shores as well as opportunities for water sports. You can still enjoy the beach views without stepping foot on the sand thanks to the paved pedestrian path that is up on the bluffs running along the beach. The 4-mile path offers an ideal stretch for a jog, stroll or relaxed bike ride. Before heading down to the sand, check out one of the popular eateries in Carlsbad Village and pick up some tasty bites to make yourself a beach picnic.
Once you’re at the beach, be prepared to have nonstop fun out in the water. Grab your board and head to the break for some mellow waves that are perfect for beginners and experienced surfers. If surfing isn’t up your alley, you can also experience the crystal-blue waters by kayak or catch some speed while windsurfing.
Being so close to Carlsbad Village has its perks when it comes to accommodation, as you’ll find no shortage of fantastic stays nearby. To be close to this beach, book your stay at the Tamarack Beach Resort. This quaint beachfront resort has a convenient location that offers ocean views, a heated pool and on-site dining. There’s even a designated adults-only spa as well as a kids’ spa so that the little ones can have fun splashing in the sun. Another nearby option is Pelican Cove Inn, located just two blocks up from Tamarack Beach. The 10 rooms feature antique furnishings reminiscent of the era when the hotel was built, giving each room its own unique flair.

South Carlsbad State Beach
Known for its popular bluff-top campground, South Carlsbad State Beach is a more secluded stretch of coastline. Composed of smaller beach sections, each with its own unique character, it’s a top choice to enjoy a peaceful day by the sea.
The northern portion consists of a narrow beach that is primarily accessible from stairs via the campground situated on the bluffs. Even if you are not camping, you can still enjoy the sweeping ocean views from The Camp Store, located within the campgrounds. This popular hub also offers live music by local artists and delicious pizza made in an authentic wood-stone oven.
As you make your way south of the campground, you’ll find a large stretch of sand that is perfect for family and kids to spend a day lounging in the sun and building sandcastles. An inlet and jetty separate this area from the lower section of the beach, known as South Ponto Beach. For added convenience, South Ponto offers amenities like restrooms, showers and a dedicated parking lot. It’s also a popular spot for surfing!
To be right up close to this beach, plan a stay at the nearby Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach located across the road. This resort boasts incredible views of the ocean, a spacious outdoor pool and luxurious rooms full of beachy style. Carlsbad Seapointe is another hotel within walking distance to the beach and close to North Ponto Beach. Its fully renovated condo-style accommodations are a great fit for families or larger groups traveling together.

Terramar Beach
This somewhat hidden beach is a hot spot for surfers and has excellent tide pooling during the low tide. Be prepared to find all sorts of fascinating marine life, from sea slugs to tiny hermit crabs roaming around the shallow pools. As this is a narrow beach, check the tide ahead of time to avoid visiting when the waves have completely covered the sand.
The beach is located right in front of the Terramar community, who can access this area from private stairwells. There is a public stairwell located along Carlsbad Boulevard that will also lead you to the walking path that goes along the bluffs. Even if you don’t wander down to the sandy beach you can still take in the stunning view from the bluff path. We suggest stopping by at sunset to capture some dramatic shots!
To be nearby Terramar Beach, book a stay at West Inn & Suites, a hidden gem much like Terramar Beach. The hotel features roomy, family-friendly suites and charming extras, like a delicious breakfast buffet and milk and cookies for a sweet treat to wind down the day.
