Agua Hedionda Lagoon & Discovery Campus
Overview
Agua Hedionda Lagoon sometimes referred to as Carlsbad Lagoon, is a saltwater wetland and watershed and offers year-round recreational and commercial use. The lagoon includes mud flats, salt, and freshwater marsh, and deep water and is actually comprised of three lagoons: a 66-acre outer lagoon, a 27-acre middle lagoon and a 293-acre inner lagoon.
It has facilities for boating, skiing, wakeboarding, sailing, windsurfing, and fishing. The Carlsbad lagoon is home to Hubbs Sea World White Sea Bass Hatchery. Kayaking the lagoon is a popular activity and is best at high tide when numerous streams appear bringing a multitude of birds and wildlife.
The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Campus is the heart of their mission to preserve the lagoon through education and outreach. Located at the eastern end of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad, the 3,800-square-foot facility has been engaging the community since 2005 with exhibits, live animal ambassadors, outdoor spaces, and hands-on activities.
It is open to the public Tuesday-Sunday, with a suggested donation of $15 per group. Join them for free weekday Discover & Learn programs, like Small Owl Thursdays and Microscope Mornings, offering up-close encounters with native animals and environmental science.
